Blog #5: KC

Throughout the Prologue and Part I, we get to see how Will feels about Charleston, North Carolina. He spends quite a bit of time detailing his likes and dislikes about the city and her occupants. Soon, many of you will be leaving home and heading out on your own for the first time. What are some things you’ll miss about our community? Any specific places that hold a special meaning for you? Why?

Next fall I will be leaving Kansas City and going to Springfield, Missouri to attend Missouri State University. One thing I will miss is the tightness of the community. It was really fun to see this during the World Series run that the Royals had this fall. During this run it felt like everyone was having fun with each other and we all felt that we could relate to the team in a certain way. Another example of the tightness was during Reat’s funeral sophomore year. Before his funeral the West Boro Baptist Church had announced that they were going to picket the funeral, after learning this many members of the community decided to make a positive protest to respond during the negativity. So on the day of the funeral many people lined the streets with signs with positive messages written on them. Next year one place I will miss in Kansas City will be Quik Trip. I will miss this, because I can go there after a hard day at work, school, or with friends. When we go there we can donuts, taquitos, and fountain drinks at affordable prices. Finally the last place I will is will be the River ridge Basketball Court. At the court I have been able to play countless pickup basketball games with my friends. It is also close to some of my friends’ houses were we are able to play video games and other activities. Man I sure will miss living in Kansas City.

Blog #4: TV Rescue

You’ve been kidnaped. You can call on the characters from one television show to make a rescue attempt. Which show do you pick? Explain, in detail, your selection and anticipated outcome. How will the rescue go down?

If I were to be kidnapped, I would like to be saved by the Parks and Recreation cast. During my kidnapping I would be taken from the local accounting firm to an empty, abandoned warehouse in Pawnee, Indiana. Then when Barney Varm does not notice me at the accounting firm we would contact Ben Wyatt, and tell him he needs help at the firm. Then Ben would come to the firm and tell an accounting joke to Barney then would start to die from laughing, but then would tell Ben I was missing. After that Ben would leave the firm and inform Leslie on what was happening. After Ben contacted Leslie, Leslie would go onto to contact the whole entire parks and recreation squad. The squad would consist of Andy, April, Donna, Tom, and Ron. Once the whole squad would get together they would all learn about the situation from Leslie. The first thing the squad to do is have Donna get on social media, and use her connections to find out what criminals would kidnap a teenage boy. Following that Donna would learn that criminals are taking people to empty warehouses, because there are no cops. Later on Andy would go into his Burt Macklin persona, and get an FBI van to drive to the warehouse. While on the way to the warehouse Tom would make sure everyone would be in dope outfits from Rent-a-Swag. Finally once they arrived at the warehouse April would distract any hoodlums, and Ron armed with a wood working saw would cut me free. After this whole ordeal we would go to Tommy’s Bistro to celebrate.

Blog #3: Most Influential Person

In the last week alone, the music and acting communities lost 3 incredible talents: David Bowie, Alan Rickman, and Glenn Frey. The sports broadcasting world also lost an announcing legend last week in Jim Simpson. Consider people of today or the past who have made their mark on the world in some way. What individual has made the greatest impact on the field of ____? Defend your position. Be sure to explain the accomplishments this person made and why these matter so much.

                I think that Gus Johnson is one of the greatest individuals to make an impact in the field of sports broadcasting. He has been one of the most recognizable voices sports games, and NBA playoff games. He is also going to Fox Sports leading commentator in the 2018 announcers. He has been hired by ESPN, CBS Sports, and Fox Sports, where he has commented some of the biggest sporting events. These events include March Madness games, NFL playoff World Cup. Johnson also has been featured in many sports video games as an in-game commentator. Johnson has also been nominated for Emmys for his commentating and being on Fox Sports and ESPN. Johnson is also very well known for coming up with a lot of phrases. These include "Oh my goodness!", "Rise and fire... Count it!", "Here comes the pain!", "He's got 'get away from the cops' speed!", "From the parking lot!", "And the Runner....Bang!", "Pure!", "BAM!", "Hot Sauce!", “Heartbreak City”, “The slipper fits”, "Cold-Blooded!", "What a game!", and " Up and in HA-HAAA".  With these comments Gus Johnson has made has helped make sports much more entertaining and memorable for the common viewer and myself. I can remember hearing his voice on T.V. has a kid, and is part of the reason on why I like sports so much today. He also has made charitable donations to many parties throughout his life, and also puts on a basketball camp for less fortunate kids every summer. Overall, Gus Johnson will be forever remembered for his vivid and upbeat commentating which has inspired many people, and is his contributions to society off-air.

Blog #2: Current Event

Knowing what is going on in the world around you is very important. Do you know what the headlines were in the local news yesterday? What about the national or international news? How often do you take the time to read about what is going on beyond your small community? Spend some time surfing the web for current events. Identify an article that was published within the last 48 hours and read the entire text. Your blog post should not only summarize what the current event is, but it should also express your personal opinion about this issue. How do you feel about this? How do you see that does or could impact your own life? Your entry should be thoughtful and thoroughly developed and no fewer than 250 words. As always, draft your prompt (and save a backup) on Word. You must cite your source at the conclusion of the blog entry. Be sure to add at least one picture that depicts this current event.

Recently there has been a spike in gun violence, and has only made the debate over gun control even bigger. In this debate people, all have different opinions and there is a variety of stances on the issue, but democrats tend to want more control over guns, while republicans want less gun control, however more factors such as race, gender, and geographic location also change when people are asked about gun control. Now though with the recent shootings democrats are becoming increasingly frustrated with the Republicans, because they do not want to make a change to the gun control policy. These policies include a tighter background check, physiological testing, and bans on buying large amounts of ammunition and certain types of guns. Since most of the republicans are not supporting the policies President Obama is, going to take executive action to pass these policies threw. Now we will have to wait and see what President Obama’s executive actions exactly are, while also seeing if the Supreme Court calls the orders constitutional. My opinion on this is that the parties need to come together on some middle ground, and make the background checks stricter, and doing small physiological tests. However, I do not think there should be limits on ammo and certain guns, because people already passed the background test and should not have the government tell them what they can and cannot buy. This issue is important to me, because I want to make sure I am safe when I go out in public.

Blog #1: New Year’s Resolution

In a fully developed response (two paragraphs minimum), define your most important goal (i.e. resolution) for the upcoming year. What is the reason you wish to achieve this goal?  What are some obstacles that stand in your way and what will you do to overcome these obstacles/hurdles? How will you measure your success? What benefits do you expect to gain by reaching your goal?

I think that one I want to improve on being a better listening and focusing person I want to achieve this goal is it will help me in the classroom, because I will able to focus and listen better, and in theory retain more information. I also think being a better listener will make me a better person in life, because I will be better at understanding people's problems.

Obstacles that stand in my way are having to block out distractions, and have the mental fortitude to focus, even when under pressure. To overcome these I will have to practice setting my mind to the goal, and improving on focusing. I will measure my success by grades and by how well my relationships are. Hopefully, these practices will help with receiving good grades and having strong relationships.
